Moving beyond the “take, make and waste” model of production and consumption – and towards a Circular Economy

The first half of this decade has seen a significant shift towards Circular Economy principles – driven by consumer demand for sustainable alternatives, government policy, and a growing focus on economic resilience and climate goals.

Different industries are embracing the challenge in their own ways. For fashion – one of the most impactful sectors for material circularity – a practical new resource has been developed to help designers and business leaders integrate circular design principles into their business models.

Developed by RMIT University in collaboration with Country Road Group and funded by Sustainability Victoria, the Refashioning Circular Design Guide is a sector-agnostic toolkit that could be applied well beyond the fashion world.

The guide covers:

  • Fundamentals – a solid introduction to circular design
  • Method – how to design, document and deliver a circular product plan
  • Application – templates and tools to put the plan into practice

The guide is a wonderful example of collaboration between private, university and government sectors, combining practical insights with academic rigour.
